Tamil Nadu State, with population of about 7 crore is India's the 6th most populous state. Total geographical area of Tamil Nadu state is about 1.3 lakh km2 and it is the 11th biggest state by area in the country. Population density of the state is 555 persons per km2. There are 32 districts in the state, among them Chennai is the most populous district with population of about 46.5 lakh and Perambalur is the least populous district with population of about 5.7 lakh. Viluppuram is the biggest district in the state with an area of 7194 km2 and Chennai is the smallest with 175 km2.

Demographics

The state is home to about 7 crore people, among them about 4 crore (50%) are male and about 4 crore (50%) are female. 79% of the whole population are from general caste, 20% are from schedule caste and 1% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Tamil Nadu state is 10%, among them 51% are boys and 49% are girls. There are about 2 crore households in the state and an average 4 persons live in every family.

The majority of the population, nearly 52% (about 4 crore) live in Tamil Nadu rural part and 48% (about 3 crore) population live in the Tamil Nadu urban part. Rural population density of Tamil Nadu state is 320 and urban population density is 2561 persons per km2.
