Goa State, with population of about 14.6 lakh is India's the 4th least populous state. Total geographical area of Goa state is 3702 km2 and it is the smallest state by area in the country. Population density of the state is 394 persons per km2. There are 2 districts in the state, among them North Goa is the most populous district with population of about 8.2 lakh and South Goa is the least populous district with population of about 6.4 lakh. South Goa is the biggest district in the state with an area of 1966 km2 and North Goa is the smallest with 1736 km2.

Demographics

The state is home to about 14.6 lakh people, among them about 7.4 lakh (51%) are male and about 7.2 lakh (49%) are female. 88% of the whole population are from general caste, 2% are from schedule caste and 10% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Goa state is 10%, among them 51% are boys and 49% are girls. There are about 3.4 lakh households in the state and an average 4 persons live in every family.

The majority of the population, nearly 62% (about 9.1 lakh) live in Goa urban part and 38% (about 5.5 lakh) population live in the Goa rural part. Rural population density of Goa state is 190 and urban population density is 1135 persons per km2.

Hindus contribute 66% of the total population and are the largest religious community in the state followed by Christians which contribute 25% of the total population and Muslims are the third largest religious community here with 8% population.. Female population growth rate of the state is 8.9% which is 1.3% higher than male population growth rate of 7.6%.
