Uttarakhand State, with population of about 1 crore is India's the 10th least populous state. Total geographical area of Uttarakhand state is about 53 thousand km2 and it is the 11th smallest state by area in the country. Population density of the state is 189 persons per km2. There are 13 districts in the state, among them Hardwar is the most populous district with population of about 18.9 lakh and Rudraprayag is the least populous district with population of about 2.4 lakh. Chamoli is the biggest district in the state with an area of 8030 km2 and Champawat is the smallest with 1766 km2.

There is only one city in the state that comes directly under the state administration which is Devaprayag Nagar Panchayat.

Demographics

The state is home to about 1 crore people, among them about 51.4 lakh (51%) are male and about 49.5 lakh (49%) are female. 78% of the whole population are from general caste, 19% are from schedule caste and 3% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Uttarakhand state is 13%, among them 53% are boys and 47% are girls. There are about 20.6 lakh households in the state and an average 5 persons live in every family.

The majority of the population, nearly 70% (about 70.4 lakh) live in Uttarakhand rural part and 30% (about 30.5 lakh) population live in the Uttarakhand urban part. Rural population density of Uttarakhand state is 134 and urban population density is 3381 persons per km2.

Hindus contribute 83% of the total population and are the largest religious community in the state followed by Muslims which contribute 14% of the total population and Sikhs are the third largest religious community here with 2% population..
