Jharkhand State, with population of about 3 crore is India's the 14th most populous state. Total geographical area of Jharkhand state is about 80 thousand km2 and it is the 14th smallest state by area in the country. Population density of the state is 414 persons per km2. There are 24 districts in the state, among them Ranchi is the most populous district with population of about 29.1 lakh and Lohardaga is the least populous district with population of about 4.6 lakh. Pashchimi Singhbhum is the biggest district in the state with an area of 7224 km2 and Ramgarh is the smallest with 1341 km2.
Demographics
The state is home to about 3 crore people, among them about 2 crore (51%) are male and about 2 crore (49%) are female. 62% of the whole population are from general caste, 12% are from schedule caste and 26% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Jharkhand state is 16%, among them 51% are boys and 49% are girls. There are about 62.5 lakh households in the state and an average 5 persons live in every family.
The majority of the population, nearly 76% (about 3 crore) live in Jharkhand rural part and 24% (about 79.3 lakh) population live in the Jharkhand urban part. Rural population density of Jharkhand state is 323 and urban population density is 3528 persons per km2.

Population of the state has increased by 22.4% in last 10 years. In 2001 census total population here were about 3 crore. Female population growth rate of the state is 22.9% which is 1% higher than male population growth rate of 21.9%. General caste population has increased by 22.1%; Schedule caste population has increased by 25%; Schedule Tribe population has increased by 22% and child population has increased by 8.7% in the state since last census.
