West Bengal State, with population of about 9 crore is India's the 4th most populous state. Total geographical area of West Bengal state is about 89 thousand km2 and it is the 13th biggest state by area in the country. Population density of the state is 1028 persons per km2. There are 21 districts in the state, among them North Twenty Four Parganas is the most populous district with population of about 1 crore and Alipurduar is the least populous district with population of about 12.2 lakh. South Twenty Four Parganas is the biggest district in the state with an area of 9960 km2 and Kolkata is the smallest with 185 km2.

There is only one city in the state that comes directly under the state administration which is Siliguri Municipal Corporation.

The state is home to about 9 crore people, among them about 5 crore (51%) are male and about 4 crore (49%) are female. 71% of the whole population are from general caste, 24% are from schedule caste and 6% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of West Bengal state is 12%, among them 51% are boys and 49% are girls. There are about 2 crore households in the state and an average 4 persons live in every family.

The majority of the population, nearly 68% (about 6 crore) live in West Bengal rural part and 32% (about 3 crore) population live in the West Bengal urban part. Rural population density of West Bengal state is 744 and urban population density is 5683 persons per km2.
