Assam State, with population of about 3 crore is India's the 15th least populous state. Total geographical area of Assam state is about 78 thousand km2 and it is the 13th smallest state by area in the country. Population density of the state is 398 persons per km2. There are 33 districts in the state, among them Nagaon is the most populous district with population of about 18.9 lakh and Majuli is the least populous district with population of about 1.7 lakh. Karbi Anglong is the biggest district in the state with an area of about 10 thousand km2 and Kamrup Metropolitan is the smallest with 955 km2.

Demographics

The state is home to about 3 crore people, among them about 2 crore (51%) are male and about 2 crore (49%) are female. 80% of the whole population are from general caste, 7% are from schedule caste and 12% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Assam state is 15%, among them 51% are boys and 49% are girls. There are about 64.1 lakh households in the state and an average 5 persons live in every family.

The majority of the population, nearly 86% (about 3 crore) live in Assam rural part and 14% (about 44 lakh) population live in the Assam urban part. Rural population density of Assam state is 347 and urban population density is 3491 persons per km2.

Female population growth rate of the state is 18.5% which is 2.8% higher than male population growth rate of 15.7%. General caste population has increased by 16.6%; Schedule caste population has increased by 22.2%; Schedule Tribe population has increased by 17.4% and child population has increased by 3.1% in the state since last census.
