Tripura State, with population of about 36.7 lakh is India's the 8th least populous state. Total geographical area of Tripura state is about 10 thousand km2 and it is the 3rd smallest state by area in the country. Population density of the state is 350 persons per km2. There are 4 districts in the state, among them West Tripura is the most populous district with population of about 17.3 lakh and Dhalai is the least populous district with population of about 3.8 lakh. South Tripura is the biggest district in the state with an area of 3057 km2 and North Tripura is the smallest with 2036 km2.

Demographics

The state is home to about 36.7 lakh people, among them about 18.7 lakh (51%) are male and about 18 lakh (49%) are female. 50% of the whole population are from general caste, 18% are from schedule caste and 32% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Tripura state is 12%, among them 51% are boys and 49% are girls. There are about 8.6 lakh households in the state and an average 4 persons live in every family.

The majority of the population, nearly 74% (about 27.1 lakh) live in Tripura rural part and 26% (about 9.6 lakh) population live in the Tripura urban part. Rural population density of Tripura state is 269 and urban population density is 2453 persons per km2.

Hindus contribute 83% of the total population and are the largest religious community in the state followed by Muslims which contribute 9% of the total population and Christians are the third largest religious community here with 4% population all other religious communities contribute 4% of the total population. Population of the state has increased by 14.8% in last 10 years. In 2001 census total population here were about 32 lakh. Female population growth rate of the state is 15.6% which is 1.5% higher than male population growth rate of 14.1%. General caste population has increased by 12.3%; Schedule caste population has increased by 17.8%; Schedule Tribe population has increased by 17.5% and child population has increased by 4.9% in the state since last census.
