Nagaland State, with population of about 19.8 lakh is India's the 5th least populous state. Total geographical area of Nagaland state is about 17 thousand km2 and it is the 4th smallest state by area in the country. Population density of the state is 119 persons per km2. There are 11 districts in the state, among them Dimapur is the most populous district with population of about 3.8 lakh and Longleng is the least populous district with population of about 50 thousand. Tuensang is the biggest district in the state with an area of 2536 km2 and Longleng is the smallest with 562 km2.

Demographics

The state is home to about 19.8 lakh people, among them about 10.2 lakh (52%) are male and about 9.5 lakh (48%) are female. 14% of the whole population are from general caste and 86% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Nagaland state is 15%, among them 51% are boys and 49% are girls. There are about 4 lakh households in the state and an average 5 persons live in every family.

The majority of the population, nearly 71% (about 14.1 lakh) live in Nagaland rural part and 29% (about 5.7 lakh) population live in the Nagaland urban part. Rural population density of Nagaland state is 86 and urban population density is 2345 persons per km2.

Christians contribute 88% of the total population and are the largest religious community in the state followed by Hindus which contribute 9% of the total population and Muslims are the third largest religious community here with 2% population..
