Sikkim State, with population of about 6.1 lakh is India's the least populous state. Total geographical area of Sikkim state is 7096 km2 and it is the 2nd smallest state by area in the country. Population density of the state is 86 persons per km2. There are 4 districts in the state, among them East District is the most populous district with population of about 2.8 lakh and North District is the least populous district with population of about 44 thousand. North District is the biggest district in the state with an area of 4226 km2 and South District is the smallest with 750 km2.
Demographics
The state is home to about 6.1 lakh people, among them about 3.2 lakh (53%) are male and about 2.9 lakh (47%) are female. 62% of the whole population are from general caste, 5% are from schedule caste and 34% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Sikkim state is 11%, among them 51% are boys and 49% are girls. There are about 1.3 lakh households in the state and an average 5 persons live in every family.
The majority of the population, nearly 75% (about 4.6 lakh) live in Sikkim rural part and 25% (about 1.5 lakh) population live in the Sikkim urban part. Rural population density of Sikkim state is 65 and urban population density is 4015 persons per km2.

Religion wise distribution of population
Hindus contribute 58% of the total population and are the largest religious community in the state followed by Buddhists which contribute 27% of the total population and Christians are the third largest religious community here with 10% population all other religious communities contribute 5% of the total population. Growth of population
Population of the state has increased by 12.9% in last 10 years. In 2001 census total population here were about 5.4 lakh. Female population growth rate of the state is 13.9% which is 1.9% higher than male population growth rate of 12%. General caste population has decreased by -6.5%; Schedule caste population has increased by 4.1%; Schedule Tribe population has increased by 85.2% and child population has decreased by -18% in the state since last census.

As of 2011 census there are 890 females per 1000 male in the state. Sex ratio in general caste is 849, in schedule caste is 956 and in schedule tribe is 960. There are 957 girls under 6 years of age per 1000 boys of the same age in the state. Overall sex ratio in the state has increased by 15 females per 1000 male during the years from 2001 to 2011. Child sex ratio here has decreased by 6 girls per 1000 boys during the same time.

Total about 4.4 lakh people in the state are literate, among them about 2.5 lakh are male and about 1.9 lakh are female. Literacy rate (children under 6 are excluded) of SIKKIM is 81%. 87% of male and 76% of female population are literate here. Overall literacy rate in the state has increased by 30%. Male literacy has gone up by 32% and female literacy rate has gone up by 31%.
