Jammu & Kashmir State, with population of about 1 crore is India's the 11th least populous state. Total geographical area of Jammu & Kashmir state is about 2.2 lakh km2 and it is the 6th biggest state by area in the country. Population density of the state is 56 persons per km2. There are 22 districts in the state, among them Jammu is the most populous district with population of about 15.3 lakh and Leh(Ladakh) is the least populous district with population of about 1.3 lakh. Leh(Ladakh) is the biggest district in the state with an area of about 45 thousand km2 and Ganderbal is the smallest with 259 km2.

There are 2 cities in the state which comes directly under the state administration, those are - Srinagar Municipal Corporation and Out Growth; and Anantnag Municipal Council and Out Growth.

Demographics

The state is home to about 1 crore people, among them about 66.4 lakh (53%) are male and about 59 lakh (47%) are female. 81% of the whole population are from general caste, 7% are from schedule caste and 12% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Jammu & Kashmir state is 16%, among them 54% are boys and 46% are girls. There are about 21.2 lakh households in the state and an average 6 persons live in every family.

The majority of the population, nearly 73% (about 91.1 lakh) live in Jammu & Kashmir rural part and 27% (about 34.3 lakh) population live in the Jammu & Kashmir urban part. Rural population density of Jammu & Kashmir state is 41 and urban population density is 2756 persons per km2.

Religion wise distribution of population

Muslims contribute 68% of the total population and are the largest religious community in the state followed by Hindus which contribute 28% of the total population and Sikhs are the third largest religious community here with 2% population all other religious communities contribute 2% of the total population.
