Total geographical area of Dharmapuri district is 4497 km2 and it is the 14th biggest district by area in the state. Population density of the district is 335 persons per km2. There are 5 sub districts in the district, among them Dharmapuri is the most populous sub district with population of about 4.4 lakh and Pennagaram is the least populous sub district with population of about 2.3 lakh.

There is only one city in the district that comes under the district administration which is Dharmapuri Municipality.
