Salem District, with population of about 34.8 lakh is Tamil Nadu's the 5th most populous district, located in the state Tamil Nadu in India. Total geographical area of Salem district is 5237 km2 and it is the 7th biggest district by area in the state. Population density of the district is 665 persons per km2. There are 9 sub districts in the district, among them Salem is the most populous sub district with population of about 12.7 lakh and Yercaud is the least populous sub district with population of about 42 thousand.
There are 5 cities in the district which comes under the district administration, those are - Salem Municipal Corporation; Attur, Edappadi, Mettur and Narasingapuram Municipalities.

The district is home to about 34.8 lakh people, among them about 17.8 lakh (51%) are male and about 17 lakh (49%) are female. 80% of the whole population are from general caste, 17% are from schedule caste and 3% are schedule tribes.
