Total geographical area of Thiruvallur district is 3394 km2 and it is the 10th smallest district by area in the state. Population density of the district is 1098 persons per km2. There are 9 sub districts in the district, among them Ambattur is the most populous sub district with population of about 9.1 lakh and Uthukkottai is the least populous sub district with population of about 1.5 lakh.
