Pune District, with population of about 94.3 lakh is Maharashtra's the 2nd most populous district, located in the state Maharashtra in India. Total geographical area of Pune district is about 16 thousand km2 and it is the 2nd biggest district by area in the state. Population density of the district is 603 persons per km2. There are 14 sub districts in the district, among them Pune City is the most populous sub district with population of about 33 lakh and Velhe is the least populous sub district with population of about 55 thousand.

There are 13 cities in the district which comes under the district administration, those are - Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporations Lonavala, Talegaon Dabhade, Baramati, Daund and Shirur Municipal Councils (limited to 5 most populous).

Demographics

The district is home to about 94.3 lakh people, among them about 49.2 lakh (52%) are male and about 45.1 lakh (48%) are female. 84% of the whole population are from general caste, 13% are from schedule caste and 4% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Pune district is 12%, among them 53% are boys and 47% are girls. There are about 21.5 lakh households in the district and an average 4 persons live in every family.

The majority of the population, nearly 61% (about 57.5 lakh) live in Pune District urban part and 39% (about 36.8 lakh) population live in the Pune District rural part. Rural population density of Pune district is 248 and urban population density is 7125 persons per km2.
