Thane District, with population of about 1 crore is Maharashtra's the most populous district, located in the state Maharashtra in India. Total geographical area of Thane district is 9558 km2 and it is the 16th biggest district by area in the state. Population density of the district is 1157 persons per km2. There are 15 sub districts in the district, among them Thane is the most populous sub district with population of about 37.9 lakh and Mokhada is the least populous sub district with population of about 83 thousand.

There are 11 cities in the district which comes under the district administration, those are - Thane, Kalyan-Dombivli, Navi Mumbai, Mira-Bhayandar and Bhiwandi Nizampur Municipal Corporations (limited to 5 most populous) Ambarnath, Badlapur, Palghar, Dahanu and Jawhar Municipal Councils.
