Kerala State, with population of about 3 crore is India's the 13th most populous state. Total geographical area of Kerala state is about 39 thousand km2 and it is the 8th smallest state by area in the country. Population density of the state is 860 persons per km2. There are 14 districts in the state, among them Malappuram is the most populous district with population of about 41.1 lakh and Wayanad is the least populous district with population of about 8.2 lakh. Palakkad is the biggest district in the state with an area of 4482 km2 and Alappuzha is the smallest with 1415 km2.

Demographics

The state is home to about 3 crore people, among them about 2 crore (48%) are male and about 2 crore (52%) are female. 89% of the whole population are from general caste, 9% are from schedule caste and 1% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Kerala state is 10%, among them 51% are boys and 49% are girls. There are about 78.5 lakh households in the state and an average 4 persons live in every family.

The majority of the population, nearly 52% (about 2 crore) live in Kerala rural part and 48% (about 2 crore) population live in the Kerala urban part. Rural population density of Kerala state is 559 and urban population density is 2097 persons per km2.
