Maharashtra State Urban Part, with population of about 5 crore is India's the most urban populous state. Total geographical area of Maharashtra state urban part is 9084 km2 and it is the 2nd biggest urban state by area in the country. Population density of the state is 5594 persons per km2. There are 35 districts in the state, among them Mumbai Suburban Urban is the most populous district with urban population of about 93.6 lakh and Sindhudurg Urban is the least populous district with urban population of about 1.1 lakh. Thane Urban is the biggest district in the state with an urban area of 1098 km2 and Hingoli Urban is the smallest with 56 km2.

There is only one city in the state that comes directly under the state administration which is Greater Mumbai Municipal Corporation.

Hindus contribute 70% of the total population and are the largest religious community in the state followed by Muslims which contribute 19% of the total population and Buddhists are the third largest religious community here with 6% population all other religious communities contribute 5% of the total population.
