Maharashtra State, with population of about 11 crore is India's the 2nd most populous state. Total geographical area of Maharashtra state is about 3.1 lakh km2 and it is the 3rd biggest state by area in the country. Population density of the state is 365 persons per km2. There are 35 districts in the state, among them Thane is the most populous district with population of about 1 crore and Sindhudurg is the least populous district with population of about 8.5 lakh. Ahmadnagar is the biggest district in the state with an area of about 17 thousand km2 and Mumbai is the smallest with 157 km2.

There is only one city in the state that comes directly under the state administration which is Greater Mumbai Municipal Corporation.

Demographics

The state is home to about 11 crore people, among them about 6 crore (52%) are male and about 5 crore (48%) are female. 79% of the whole population are from general caste, 12% are from schedule caste and 9% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Maharashtra state is 12%, among them 53% are boys and 47% are girls. There are about 2 crore households in the state and an average 5 persons live in every family.

The majority of the population, nearly 55% (about 6 crore) live in Maharashtra rural part and 45% (about 5 crore) population live in the Maharashtra urban part. Rural population density of Maharashtra state is 206 and urban population density is 5594 persons per km2.

Hindus contribute 80% of the total population and are the largest religious community in the state followed by Muslims which contribute 12% of the total population and Buddhists are the third largest religious community here with 6% population all other religious communities contribute 2% of the total population.
