Jammu & Kashmir State Urban Part, with population of about 34.3 lakh is India's the 11th least urban populous state. Total geographical area of Jammu & Kashmir state urban part is 1246 km2 and it is the 11th smallest urban state by area in the country. Population density of the state is 2756 persons per km2. There are 22 districts in the state, among them Srinagar Urban is the most populous district with urban population of about 12.2 lakh and Ramban Urban is the least populous district with urban population of about 12 thousand. Srinagar Urban is the biggest district in the state with an urban area of 295 km2 and Kishtwar Urban is the smallest with 1 km2.

There are 2 cities in the state which comes directly under the state administration, those are - Srinagar Municipal Corporation and Out Growth; and Anantnag Municipal Council and Out Growth.

Demographics

The state is home to about 34.3 lakh people, among them about 18.7 lakh (54%) are male and about 15.7 lakh (46%) are female. 92% of the whole population are from general caste, 5% are from schedule caste and 3% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Jammu & Kashmir state urban part is 12%, among them 54% are boys and 46% are girls. There are about 5.7 lakh households in the state and an average 6 persons live in every family.

Muslims contribute 64% of the total population and are the largest religious community in the state followed by Hindus which contribute 31% of the total population and Sikhs are the third largest religious community here with 3% population all other religious communities contribute 2% of the total population. Population of the state has increased by 36.4% in last 10 years. In 2001 census total population here were about 25.2 lakh. Female population growth rate of the state is 38.3% which is 3.4% higher than male population growth rate of 34.9%. General caste population has increased by 36.1%; Schedule caste population has increased by 29.7%; Schedule Tribe population has increased by 67.9% and child population has increased by 57.3% in the state since last census.
