Meghalaya State, with population of about 29.7 lakh is India's the 7th least populous state. Total geographical area of Meghalaya state is about 22 thousand km2 and it is the 7th smallest state by area in the country. Population density of the state is 132 persons per km2. There are 7 districts in the state, among them East Khasi Hills is the most populous district with population of about 8.3 lakh and South Garo Hills is the least populous district with population of about 1.4 lakh. West Khasi Hills is the biggest district in the state with an area of 5247 km2 and South Garo Hills is the smallest with 1887 km2.

Demographics

The state is home to about 29.7 lakh people, among them about 14.9 lakh (50%) are male and about 14.8 lakh (50%) are female. 13% of the whole population are from general caste, 1% are from schedule caste and 86% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Meghalaya state is 19%, among them 51% are boys and 49% are girls. There are about 5.5 lakh households in the state and an average 5 persons live in every family.

The majority of the population, nearly 80% (about 23.7 lakh) live in Meghalaya rural part and 20% (about 6 lakh) population live in the Meghalaya urban part. Rural population density of Meghalaya state is 107 and urban population density is 2105 persons per km2.

Population of the state has increased by 27.9% in last 10 years. In 2001 census total population here were about 23.2 lakh. Female population growth rate of the state is 29.1% which is 2.3% higher than male population growth rate of 26.8%. General caste population has increased by 25%; Schedule caste population has increased by 55.8%; Schedule Tribe population has increased by 28.3% and child population has increased by 21.5% in the state since last census.
