Mizoram State, with population of about 11 lakh is India's the 2nd least populous state. Total geographical area of Mizoram state is about 21 thousand km2 and it is the 5th smallest state by area in the country. Population density of the state is 52 persons per km2. There are 8 districts in the state, among them Aizawl is the most populous district with population of about 4 lakh and Saiha is the least populous district with population of about 57 thousand. Lunglei is the biggest district in the state with an area of 4536 km2 and Kolasib is the smallest with 1382 km2.

Demographics

The state is home to about 11 lakh people, among them about 5.6 lakh (51%) are male and about 5.4 lakh (49%) are female. 5% of the whole population are from general caste, 0% are from schedule caste and 94% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Mizoram state is 15%, among them 51% are boys and 49% are girls. There are about 2.2 lakh households in the state and an average 5 persons live in every family.

The majority of the population, nearly 52% (about 5.7 lakh) live in Mizoram urban part and 48% (about 5.3 lakh) population live in the Mizoram rural part. Rural population density of Mizoram state is 26 and urban population density is 974 persons per km2.

Christians contribute 87% of the total population and are the largest religious community in the state followed by Buddhists which contribute 9% of the total population and Hindus are the third largest religious community here with 3% population.. Population of the state has increased by 23.5% in last 10 years. In 2001 census total population here were about 8.9 lakh. Female population growth rate of the state is 26.2% which is 5.2% higher than male population growth rate of 21%.
