Manipur State, with population of about 28.6 lakh is India's the 6th least populous state. Total geographical area of Manipur state is about 22 thousand km2 and it is the 6th smallest state by area in the country. Population density of the state is 128 persons per km2. There are 9 districts in the state, among them Imphal West is the most populous district with population of about 5.2 lakh and Tamenglong is the least populous district with population of about 1.4 lakh. Churachandpur is the biggest district in the state with an area of 4570 km2 and Bishnupur is the smallest with 496 km2.

There are 4 cities in the state which comes directly under the state administration, those are - Imphal Municipal Council and Out Growth; Lilong Thoubal and Samurou Nagar Panchayats and Nambol Municipal Council.

Demographics

The state is home to about 28.6 lakh people, among them about 14.4 lakh (50%) are male and about 14.2 lakh (50%) are female. 56% of the whole population are from general caste, 3% are from schedule caste and 41% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Manipur state is 13%, among them 52% are boys and 48% are girls. There are about 5.6 lakh households in the state and an average 5 persons live in every family.
