Bihar State, with population of about 10 crore is India's the 3rd most populous state. Total geographical area of Bihar state is about 94 thousand km2 and it is the 12th biggest state by area in the country. Population density of the state is 1106 persons per km2. There are 38 districts in the state, among them Patna is the most populous district with population of about 58.4 lakh and Sheikhpura is the least populous district with population of about 6.4 lakh. Pashchim Champaran is the biggest district in the state with an area of 5228 km2 and Sheohar is the smallest with 349 km2.

Demographics

The state is home to about 10 crore people, among them about 5 crore (52%) are male and about 5 crore (48%) are female. 83% of the whole population are from general caste, 16% are from schedule caste and 1% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Bihar state is 18%, among them 52% are boys and 48% are girls. There are about 2 crore households in the state and an average 6 persons live in every family.

The majority of the population, nearly 89% (about 9 crore) live in Bihar rural part and 11% (about 1 crore) population live in the Bihar urban part. Rural population density of Bihar state is 1005 and urban population density is 5058 persons per km2.

Female population growth rate of the state is 25.3% which is -0.2% lower than male population growth rate of 25.5%. General caste population has increased by 24.6%; Schedule caste population has increased by 27%; Schedule Tribe population has increased by 76.2% and child population has increased by 13.9% in the state since last census.
