Jammu & Kashmir State Rural Part, with population of about 91.1 lakh is India's the 11th least rural populous state. Total geographical area of Jammu & Kashmir state rural part is about 2.2 lakh km2 and it is the 6th biggest rural state by area in the country. Population density of the state is 41 persons per km2. There are 22 districts in the state, among them Baramula Rural is the most populous district with rural population of about 8.3 lakh and Srinagar Rural is the least populous district with rural population of about 17 thousand. Leh(Ladakh) Rural is the biggest district in the state with an rural area of about 45 thousand km2 and Ganderbal Rural is the smallest with 234 km2.

There are 2 cities in the state which comes directly under the state administration, those are - Srinagar Municipal Corporation and Out Growth; and Anantnag Municipal Council and Out Growth.

Demographics

The state is home to about 91.1 lakh people, among them about 47.7 lakh (52%) are male and about 43.3 lakh (48%) are female. 76% of the whole population are from general caste, 8% are from schedule caste and 15% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Jammu & Kashmir state rural part is 17%, among them 54% are boys and 46% are girls. There are about 15.5 lakh households in the state and an average 6 persons live in every family.

Religion wise distribution of population

Muslims contribute 70% of the total population and are the largest religious community in the state followed by Hindus which contribute 28% of the total population and Sikhs are the third largest religious community here with 1% population.. Female Sex ratio per 1000 male in Muslims are 935 in Hindus are 848 and in Sikhs are 784.

Population of the state has increased by 19.4% in last 10 years. In 2001 census total population here were about 76.3 lakh. Female population growth rate of the state is 18.7% which is -1.3% lower than male population growth rate of 20%. General caste population has increased by 17.1%; Schedule caste population has increased by 18.1%; Schedule Tribe population has increased by 33.4% and child population has increased by 31.1% in the state since last census.

Total about 47.5 lakh people in the state are literate, among them about 28.9 lakh are male and about 18.6 lakh are female.
