India, with population of about 121 crore is the World's 2nd most populous country. Total geographical area of India country is about 32.9 lakh km2. Population density of the country is 368 persons per km2. There are 36 states in the country, among them Uttar Pradesh is the most populous state with population of about 20 crore and Lakshadweep is the least populous state with population of about 64 thousand. Rajasthan is the biggest state in the country with an area of about 3.4 lakh km2 and Lakshadweep is the smallest with 30 km2.

Demographics

The country is home to about 121 crore people, among them about 62 crore (51%) are male and about 59 crore (49%) are female. 75% of the whole population are from general caste, 17% are from schedule caste and 9% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of India country is 14%, among them 52% are boys and 48% are girls. There are about 25 crore households in the country and an average 5 persons live in every family.

The majority of the population, nearly 69% (about 83 crore) live in India Country rural part and 31% (about 38 crore) population live in the India Country urban part. Rural population density of India country is 269 and urban population density is 3689 persons per km2.

Hindus contribute 80% of the total population and are the largest religious community in the country followed by Muslims which contribute 14% of the total population and Christians are the third largest religious community here with 2% population all other religious communities contribute 4% of the total population. As of 2011 census there are 943 females per 1000 male in the country. Sex ratio in general caste is 937, in schedule caste is 945 and in schedule tribe is 990. There are 918 girls under 6 years of age per 1000 boys of the same age in the country. Overall sex ratio in the country has increased by 18 females per 1000 male during the years from 2001 to 2011. Child sex ratio here has increased by 43 girls per 1000 boys during the same time.
