Total geographical area of Madurai district is 3710 km2 and it is the 14th smallest district by area in the state. Population density of the district is 819 persons per km2. There are 7 sub districts in the district, among them Madurai South is the most populous sub district with population of about 13.9 lakh and Usilampatti is the least populous sub district with population of about 2 lakh.

There are 8 cities in the district which comes under the district administration, those are - Madurai Municipal Corporation; Avaniapuram, Anaiyur, Thirumangalam, Thiruparankundram and Melur Municipalities (limited to 5 most populous) and Thiruparankundram Municipality and Out Growth.
