Total geographical area of Alappuzha district is 1415 km2 and it is the smallest district by area in the state. Population density of the district is 1504 persons per km2. There are 6 sub districts in the district, among them Cherthala is the most populous sub district with population of about 5.4 lakh and Kuttanad is the least populous sub district with population of about 1.9 lakh.

There are 6 cities in the district which comes under the district administration, those are - Alappuzha Municipality and Out Growth; Alappuzha, Kayamkulam, Cherthala, Mavelikkara and Chengannur Municipalities.
