Total geographical area of Kannur district is 2961 km2 and it is the 6th biggest district by area in the state. Population density of the district is 852 persons per km2. There are 3 sub districts in the district, among them Thalassery is the most populous sub district with population of about 9.7 lakh and Taliparamba is the least populous sub district with population of about 7.6 lakh.

There are 6 cities in the district which comes under the district administration, those are - Thalassery, Taliparamba, Payyannur, Kannur and Mattannur Municipalities (limited to 5 most populous).

The district is home to about 25.2 lakh people, among them about 11.8 lakh (47%) are male and about 13.4 lakh (53%) are female. 95% of the whole population are from general caste, 3% are from schedule caste and 2% are schedule tribes.
