Shimoga District, with population of about 17.5 lakh is Karnataka's the 16th least populous district, located in the state Karnataka in India. Total geographical area of Shimoga district is 8478 km2 and it is the 6th biggest district by area in the state. Population density of the district is 207 persons per km2. There are 7 sub districts in the district, among them Shimoga is the most populous sub district with population of about 5.1 lakh and Hosanagara is the least populous sub district with population of about 1.2 lakh.

Demographics

The district is home to about 17.5 lakh people, among them about 8.8 lakh (50%) are male and about 8.8 lakh (50%) are female. 79% of the whole population are from general caste, 18% are from schedule caste and 4% are schedule tribes.
