Total geographical area of Yavatmal district is about 14 thousand km2 and it is the 6th biggest district by area in the state. Population density of the district is 204 persons per km2. There are 16 sub districts in the district, among them Yavatmal is the most populous sub district with population of about 3.8 lakh and Maregaon is the least populous sub district with population of about 79 thousand.

There are 9 cities in the district which comes under the district administration, those are - Yavatmal, Pusad, Wani, Umarkhed and Digras Municipal Councils (limited to 5 most populous).
