Total geographical area of Akola district is 5676 km2 and it is the 8th smallest district by area in the state. Population density of the district is 320 persons per km2. There are 7 sub districts in the district, among them Akola is the most populous sub district with population of about 7.3 lakh and Patur is the least populous sub district with population of about 1.4 lakh.

There are 6 cities in the district which comes under the district administration, those are - Akola Municipal Corporation; Akot, Balapur, Murtijapur, Patur and Telhara Municipal Councils.
