Kandhamal District, with population of about 7.3 lakh is Odisha's the 8th least populous district, located in the state Odisha in India. Total geographical area of Kandhamal district is 8021 km2 and it is the 6th biggest district by area in the state. Population density of the district is 91 persons per km2. There are 17 sub districts in the district, among them Baliguda is the most populous sub district with population of about 97 thousand and Nuagaon is the least populous sub district with population of about 19 thousand.

There is only one city in the district that comes under the district administration which is Phulabani Municipality.

The district is home to about 7.3 lakh people, among them about 3.6 lakh (49%) are male and about 3.7 lakh (51%) are female. 31% of the whole population are from general caste, 16% are from schedule caste and 54% are schedule tribes.
