Total geographical area of Gajapati district is 4325 km2 and it is the 15th smallest district by area in the state. Population density of the district is 134 persons per km2. There are 10 sub districts in the district, among them R.Udaygiri is the most populous sub district with population of about 86 thousand and Garabandha is the least populous sub district with population of about 29 thousand.
