Dhenkanal District, with population of about 11.9 lakh is Odisha's the 13th least populous district, located in the state Odisha in India. Total geographical area of Dhenkanal district is 4452 km2 and it is the 16th smallest district by area in the state. Population density of the district is 268 persons per km2. There are 13 sub districts in the district, among them Dhenkanal Sadar is the most populous sub district with population of about 2.8 lakh and Bhusan Steel Limited is the least populous sub district with population of about 27 thousand.

There is only one city in the district that comes under the district administration which is Dhenkanal Municipality.

The district is home to about 11.9 lakh people, among them about 6.1 lakh (51%) are male and about 5.8 lakh (49%) are female. 67% of the whole population are from general caste, 20% are from schedule caste and 14% are schedule tribes.
