Darjiling District, with population of about 18.5 lakh is West Bengal's the 3rd least populous district, located in the state West Bengal in India. Total geographical area of Darjiling district is 3149 km2 and it is the 6th smallest district by area in the state. Population density of the district is 586 persons per km2. There are 12 sub districts in the district, among them Phansidewa is the most populous sub district with population of about 2 lakh and Mirik is the least populous sub district with population of about 46 thousand.

There are 3 cities in the district which comes under the district administration, those are - Darjiling, Kalimpong and Kurseong Municipalities.

The district is home to about 18.5 lakh people, among them about 9.4 lakh (51%) are male and about 9.1 lakh (49%) are female. 61% of the whole population are from general caste, 17% are from schedule caste and 22% are schedule tribes. Child (aged under 6 years) population of Darjiling district is 10%, among them 51% are boys and 49% are girls.
