Total geographical area of Bhagalpur district is 2569 km2 and it is the 17th biggest district by area in the state. Population density of the district is 1182 persons per km2. There are 16 sub districts in the district, among them Jagdishpur is the most populous sub district with population of about 5.7 lakh and Ismailpur is the least populous sub district with population of about 43 thousand.

There is only one city in the district that comes under the district administration which is Bhagalpur Municipal Corporation.
