Total geographical area of Baramula district is 4243 km2 and it is the 4th biggest district by area in the state. Population density of the district is 238 persons per km2. There are 8 sub districts in the district, among them Pattan is the most populous sub district with population of about 2.3 lakh and Kreeri is the least populous sub district with population of about 67 thousand.

There are 9 cities in the district which comes under the district administration, those are - Baramula (M Cl + OG) and Sopore (M Cl + OG) Municipal Council and Out Growths; Sopore (M Cl) and Baramula (M Cl) Municipal Councils Pattan (MC), Uri (MC), Watra Gam (MC), Gulmarg (MC) and Kunzer (MC) Municipal Committees.
