Total geographical area of Varanasi district is 1535 km2 and it is the 5th smallest district by area in the state. Population density of the district is 2395 persons per km2. There are 2 sub districts in the district, among them Varanasi is the most populous sub district with population of about 30.5 lakh and Pindra is the least populous sub district with population of about 6.3 lakh.

There is only one city in the district that comes under the district administration which is Varanasi Municipal Corporation.
